The Physics and Engineering of IEEE 802.11 Wireless Networking
Wireless Fidelity, commonly referred to as Wi-Fi, is a technology based on the IEEE 802.11 family of standards that facilitates local area networking through radio frequency (RF) signals.
Radio Frequency Modulation and Transmission
Wi-Fi operates primarily in the 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and increasingly the 6 GHz frequency bands. Data is translated into radio waves by a wireless adapter and transmitted via an access point or router using complex modulation techniques such as Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM).
The Role of the Wireless Access Point
The router serves as a central hub, receiving wired data from the internet service provider and broadcasting it as a wireless signal. Conversely, it receives RF signals from client devices and converts them back into digital packets for transmission over the wired network.
Signal Degradation and Interference Factors
Wireless performance is subject to environmental variables, including physical obstructions (walls, floors) and electromagnetic interference from other electronic devices. Strategic placement of access points and the use of mesh networking can mitigate these challenges.
